1. What Is the General Employment Permit?
Unlike specialized permits that focus strictly on niche tech or executive roles, the Ireland general work permit covers all occupations except those explicitly listed on the Ineligible List of Occupations. This makes it the most flexible and widely used employment permit Ireland offers to international talent.
Initial Validity: Granted for up to two years initially, renewable for up to three additional years.
Path to Permanent Residency: After 57 months (4.75 years) of consecutive employment using the General Employment Permit visa, one can apply for Stamp 4 authorization, which provides an opportunity to work without an employment permit.

The 50/50 Rule: At the time of application, unless an official startup exemption applies, at least 50% of the employer's total workforce must be European Economic Area (EEA) citizens.
Qualifications & Skills: For the particular job, the applicant must have the appropriate education, degree, or proven professional experience.

B. Labour Market Needs Test (LMNT)
Before an employer can sponsor a candidate for a General Employment Permit, they must demonstrate that a suitable Irish or EEA candidate could not be found to fill the vacancy.
Important Policy Rule: To pass the Labour Market Needs Test, the job advertisement must run for at least 28 days in a row on the EURES and Jobs Ireland websites, as well as an additional internet recruiting platform. Applications submitted without completing the full 28-day advertising window will be rejected immediately by DETE.
C. Application Steps and Processing
Both sponsoring employers and candidates may avoid typical administrative delays by understanding the step-by-step Ireland work permit process.
I. Secure a Valid Job Offer: The employer issues a formal contract detailing the job duties, working hours, and compliant annual remuneration.
II. Conduct the Labour Market Needs Test: The employer advertises the position on the government portals for the necessary 28 days.
III. Submit Online via EPOS: Either the employer or employee registers and completes the online application through DETE’s Employment Permits Online System (EPOS).
