Education system levels in Ireland

The Irish education system explains the quality it offers to students. Education in Ireland is primarily classified in four levels.

  • Basic Level of Education (Level 1 to 3)
  • Diplomas and Certificates (Levels 4 to 7)
  • Bachelors Degrees (Levels 7 and 8)
  • Masters Degrees (Levels 9 and 10)

Traditionally, Ireland's education system has been divided into three basic levels such as primary, secondary and higher education, providing a wide variety of opportunities from post-secondary to vocational courses and technical training to complete graduation and the highest post-graduate levels.

  • Primary Education - It covers the initial education periods of 8 years.
  • Secondary Education - It begins at the age of twelve years and lasts for six years.
  • Higher Education - It begins at NFQ level 6 onwards.

Third-level education consists of a variety of universities, the technical institutes and the professional colleges. Moreover, there are a number of private independent schools and seven universities, which are autonomous and self- governing. They offer bachelor, master, and doctorate degree programs.

National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)

The NFQ specifies the standards of Irish education qualifications. It covers and compares the learning standards, qualifications and facilitates the transfer between institutions, which means it allows students to switch from one level of study to another level until their student visa requirements are met. Since the qualifications under NFQ correspond with that of European Qualification Framework, the degree is universally recognized and accepted. Remember that all Irish universities, Institutes of Technology and private colleges offer third-level qualifications in the NFQ.

Higher or third-level education

Higher education covers universities, colleges, and institutes of technology, most of which are sponsored by the Irish Government. Ireland has 7 universities, 7 educational colleges, 15 private higher education institutions and 14 Institutes of Technology. There are a few additional third-level private institutions in Ireland that provide professional education in fields such as business studies, law, art and design, medicine and more.

Academic year

Higher education is generally divided into two semesters

  • The first semester begins in September and ends in December.
  • The one-month break for Christmas: From mid-December to mid-January.
  • The second semester begins in mid-January and ends in May.
  • Summer vacation starts from mid-May to early September.

Tuition Fees

Ireland is a fantastic place to enjoy world-class education, quality of life and a colorful cultural confluence. While Ireland's tuition fee is fair, it's better to focus on managing your expenses well. Tuition costs for international students vary depending on the type and duration of the course. In Ireland, all universities set their own tuition fees, depending on the subject and study level. The total degree costs from €10,000 to €25,000 per annum.

Teaching and learning style

Ireland's universities and colleges have an immersive and creative approach to learning in which you can communicate with both your classmates and your teacher while knowing the topic and discussion concept. The Irish program aims to help foreign students, both in and outside the classroom. You will be required to do a lot of independent learning which could include working on assignments, reading a lot of research lists and taking notes during your lectures. Apart from classes, workshops are also provided to help students better understand the concepts. The size of the classroom is smaller than that of India and the medium of instruction is English. You can take some time to get used to the Irish accent as an Indian student but once you do, you'll know why it's called the world's most charming accent.

After graduation

The Irish Government provides students who have graduated from Irish universities the ability to live in Ireland for up to 24 months for jobs, as per the updated Third Level Graduate Scheme authorization.
